What Problem Did We Solve for Our Customer?

Operating worldwide in offshore heavy lifting and wind energy, Boskalis runs 24/7 where operational and enterprise data must always remain available. With critical data streams flowing from SCADA systems, sensors, and enterprise platforms, maintaining uptime is not optional.

The challenge was clear: migrate mission-critical operational and enterprise data to a modern, Azure-based platform without disrupting ongoing operations. This required balancing innovation and stability, ensuring both scalability and cybersecurity across global operations.


What Did We Create to Solve This Problem?

The Vision: A Secure, Cloud-Native Data Backbone

We designed a phased migration strategy built for reliability, scalability, and transparency—enabling Boskalis to modernize its digital core while keeping operations uninterrupted.

Our approach focused on combining containerized workloads, digital twin simulation, and event-driven integration under strict IT/OT security governance.


Phased Transition & Implementation

Key components of the solution included:

  • Migration to Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS) for containerized microservices
  • Deployment of an Azure Digital Twins environment for data modeling and simulation
  • Development of a new integration layer using Azure Functions, Event Hub, and Service Bus
  • Application of ISA-95 and IEC 62443 security segmentation principles
  • Setup of a complete CI/CD pipeline with Azure DevOps, including test automation and Infrastructure-as-Code using Bicep
